Comebacks

By Derek Bunker

Following tonight’s 22-0 debacle for the Yankees vs. Cleveland, I found some random pearls of wisdom from "diehard" Yankee fans around the web. Here are my answers to them.

NY YANKEE FANS (NYYF): Rick Peterson (Mets) would look real good as the new pitching coach.
CROMWELL SOX FAN (CSF): And how exactly would this happen? If you say a trade you need help. Pitching coaches don’t get traded mid-season. Think the Mets are going to help out the Yankees? Guess again. Mets have tons of problems. Last thing they’re doing is helping out the 100 pound gorilla in the Bronx.

NYYF: Fire Mel Stottlemyre as pitching coach, Joe Torre will resign in protest and Willie Randolph will take over with Billy Connors as his pitching coach.
CSF: That’s high comedy and I’d love to see that one happen. Bring it on!

NYYF: The Jose Contreras trade was bad.
CSF: Two part answer on this one. a) Are you guys serious? Most of you couldn’t wait to run this guy out of town. b) Now you know what it’s like making a trade with the Yankees and getting back a bag of balls.

NYYF: Javier Vasquez is just a good pitcher from a bad team. (Expos)
CSF: He’s 28 and if you don’t want him, Sox fans will be glad to take him as our #5 starter.

NYYF: Either Esteban Loaiza or Tanyon Sturtze will be George’s fall guy for 22-0.
CSF: Does it really matter? These two are not your most serious problem.

NYYF: A loss like this really fires Derek Jeter up and makes him want to win even more.
CSF: Who cares? If he needs games like this for motivation what does that say about him? You know what he can do with all his World Series rings…

NYYF: Mel (Stottlemyre) teaches pitchers not to try so much for strikeouts.
CSF: Good thing then that Randy Johnson stayed out of New York.

NYYF: George was so mad he fired himself.
CSF: Now he’s on the right track!

As a Red Sox fan, reading good comedy like this is better than some episodes of "All in the Family." Sox fans breathe it all in like a fine wine. 3.5 games and counting……
