An Act Of Stupidity: The Kevin Brown Story
By JoeDavis
Yankee Pitcher Kevin Brown committed a classic, melodramatic act of stupidity Friday night. Perhaps frustrated by injury and a season of disappointing performances, Brown decided to punch a clubhouse wall, badly busting up his left hand.
Brown will miss at least three weeks and could even be out for the rest of the season. After being examined Saturday, the team physician and a hand specialist decided he would need a pin inserted into his left hand.
"For certain, I'm happy it's the left and not the right. The thing that bothers me is that he thought enough to throw the left and not the right. I wish he would have thought a little more on that subject,'' Torre said. "He still has to field his position, catch the ball and do all those things.'' - AP Story.
Brian Cashman said Kevin Brown could be disciplined or fined. Torre talked to Brown and expressed his disappointment in his 39-year-old pitcher who threw a tantrum like a teenager.
So now the Yankees are faced with some big decisions. Who will they bring into the rotation?
Most likely Esteban Loaiza, who was kicked out of his starting job a week ago, will get the job back. However, he will need to step it up to impress Torre and could face being put back into the bullpen if he has another bad outing.
Second in line, Tanyon Sturtze. He has made spot starts all year and has not pitched more than 6 innings in a game. That is a concern for the Yankees because their bullpen, however strong, is very overworked.
The bullpen will continue to be overworked and will have to do all the heavy lifting. On the flip side, the Red Sox have one of the easiest workloads on their bullpen because their starting pitching does a very good job at eating up innings.
Mike Mussina will have to be the Yankees' stopper. They need this man to step up and go deep into the game and get some wins.
And now, the ESPY for the Most Stupid Play of the Year, Kevin Brown...
